surfing the Waves of uncertainty

What an eloquent response from John to my last photo- thanks! I hope this one does something for you too. This is the kind of sunset picture that holds some meaning for me.

Duncan, I've lost track of how many times I've sat in front of this stunning photo and tried to write something. The picture as a whole, as well as the different textures and colors are so beautiful I'm afraid that if I were to write something I'd mess it up. Yes, there are elements in the picture that remind me of various aspects of life and these thoughts are helpful, but I'd rather leave this piece of art alone to speak for itself. I'm curious, though, about your comment that this is the kind of sunset picture that holds some meaning for you. I wonder what meaning that is . . .

Thank you for sharing this scene.

John, I'm so touched by your responses to my images, and there's no way you could mess anything up by writing about them! I love reading what you see, and how you feel in response to my images, and to others' postings. As for the meaning of sunsets, it's a little like not wanting to mess something up with words- a sunset or a moonrise, or a wave sweeping onto a beach are all divine performances that we are invited to witness. To try to "capture" such an event, the way many sunset photos do, seems futile at best. So a photo, or other work of creative response to the world (art) that works from within is more meaningful to me. A photo that evokes the feeling of sunset (or any other feeling in the viewer), rather than showing what the sunset looked like- does this make sense?
