Stillness

Poised, watchful, patient, graceful, and very very still...

This image is so rich. In it, I see (or perhaps "feel" is a better word) both stillness and flowing. The movement of the water and the graceful stance of the heron.

This is a strong representation of the Witness to me.

I have had an ongoing relationship (at least in MY mind) with the herons who frequent the area around the 4th Ave bridge. For the last five years or so, I've been greeting them, watching them, honoring them and sometimes making photos. They have gifted me deeply by their presence, always appearing in just the way and at just the time that would be most beneficial to me- often at or just after dusk I have moved slowly across the bridge, waiting and looking for some sign of a heron, and sometimes it's only the subtlest thing- a croaking primordial cry from far out over the water, nearly drowned out by the sound of the traffic, but they're always there when I need them. I took the Stillness photo from the overlook by the 5th Ave sluice gates, where this heron was catching small fish, not more than 30 feet from the street. I would say these herons have witnessed plenty, and they certainly have been a huge inspiration for me.
